Who Do You Reflect?
Who do you reflect?
I see the moon, and the moon sees me; God bless the moon, and God bless me.
My parents would regularly say this little saying to me when we were out on walks at night when I was a young boy. This is probably the main reason why I’ve always been fascinated with the moon as a child and now as an adult.
Funny thing about the moon, the only light the moon provides is from the sun. The moon can only reflect what it receives from the sun. It cannot generate light on its own. It just reflects light faithfully night after night.
When Jesus was on earth He lived like His Father. He loved like His Father. He showed us His Father faithfully day after day by reflecting only what He received from His Father! If Jesus, the very Son of God, found it important to reflect the Father. It begs the question, shouldn’t we reflect the Father as well?
We are all motivated and driven by many things. Our faith, family, job, friends, health, wealth, hobbies, games, sports, love, and the list goes on and on. Which are all good in and of themselves or they can all be bad if used improperly to simply further our comfort and status. It comes down to the motives of our heart. Are we asking God how we can use our money, possessions, and passions to bless others? Are we seeking God’s guidance as we start each day to see how we can use the abilities and treasure He blesses us with so we can in turn bless others?
The two most important commandments in the Bible, known as the Golden Rule, tell us to first “love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” And the second, like it, is this: “you should love your neighbor as yourself.” These two commandments meet the entire requirement of the Law…if followed. Pretty hard to accomplish on our own power.
It is so important we put our faith, hope, and trust in Jesus as our LORD and Savior. Only Jesus can provide the salvation we need to enter eternity (check out Acts 4:12). We need to cling to Jesus like we would a parachute with no straps to secure us if we were to jump out of a plane. Can you imagine a parachute with no straps to secure yourself? How hard would you cling to this parachute? We need to cling tighter to Jesus.
While we are clinging to Jesus we need to learn to walk like Him, to talk like Him, and to act like Him. We learn this over time by faithfully reading God’s Word, by regularly praying, through worship, and by obeying God’s commands even when those commands are difficult and hard. As we draw close to God, He will draw close to us. We will start to become more like Jesus. We will begin to reflect the light of Jesus in our daily lives.
Just as the moon reflects the sun faithfully on a regular basis. May we draw closer to Jesus and build our lives on His Word. So we will faithfully reflect what we receive from our LORD day after day and night after night.
